Introducing Dart and Compass Media’s latest project, TimeBack

Dart and Compass Media present TimeBack, a project to preserve and showcase Cayman’s storied history.

Compass Media has been storing 57 years’ worth of photo negatives in its attic for decades. While Hurricane Ivan destroyed a small percentage of the negatives, the majority are intact. This photo collection is a priceless encapsulation of Cayman’s recent history.

Dart and Compass Media have partnered to digitise the photo collection and making selected media accessible to the public through a website in a project titled TimeBack. The photos will be released to the public in a phased approach with monthly collection releases.

Beyond this initial sharing of selected images, Dart and Compass Media are exploring options to further increase the public’s access to this vast collection that takes us on a trip down memory lane to celebrate Cayman’s history. They include activations in various districts as well as creating a physical exhibit space with educational opportunities. These efforts will build as the Cayman Compass prepares to celebrate 60 years of publication in its various iterations in 2025.

In the video below, key individuals who have been intimately involved in the project - including Jackie Doak, Ivan Burges and Craig Merren - speak about the genesis of TimeBack and the passion involved in making this a reality. We invite you to take a journey through Cayman’s past by visiting timeback.ky.
