For Javon Watson, the opportunity for hands-on learning has been pivotal in his young career.

Watson, a former apprentice with the Public Works Department Apprenticeship Training Programme (ATP), joined Dart full-time in August as a junior building maintenance technician trainee.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far,” Watson said. “When I first joined Dart, I was immediately greeted by a helpful team who was committed to helping me achieve my goals. Every day since has been a great learning experience that has opened my mind to chasing more than I originally wanted for myself.”

Over the years, Dart partnered with the ATP to help create a launchpad for Caymanian talent and empower a new generation with the skills, confidence and opportunities to thrive in industries vital to the island’s future. Watson is one of several Dart employees who have successfully transitioned from apprentice to a full-time role with the company's property management engineering team.

Another is D’Andre Bodden.

“It’s been a privilege to watch D’Andre mature over the past five years into his role as a junior building maintenance technician. He is ever more eager to take on new challenges and grow his career,” said Dart Chief Engineer, PM Engineering Cornell John.

Bodden said the programme helped lay a strong foundation for his current role at Dart, and over the years he has become more confident in the field.

“Mr. Cornell has always been there for me and has really helped me to grow and develop problem-solving skills,” Bodden said.

The ATP initiative was designed to equip young Caymanians from ages 16 to 29 with hands-on experience in various technical fields, including electrical, air conditioning, control systems and plumbing. During their six-month tenure, interns work alongside experienced experts, gaining practical skills.

At Dart, some of the tasks interns work on include the setup and breakdown of events in the Camana Bay Town Centre, such as Moonlight & Movies and the weekly Farmers Market, or even troubleshooting chilled water air handlers.

“The programme provides a great opportunity for trainees to experience the intricacies of facilities operations and maintenance. It’s a partnership we are committed to continuing and expanding to include more trainees,” John said.

The ATP gives young Caymanians exposure to a wide range of careers, such as: plumbers, masons, carpenters, electricians, elevator repairers, roofers, AC technicians, project managers, field inspectors, construction engineers, foremen, architects and more.
