Anja van Genderen

2018 William A. Dart Memorial University Scholar

2014 High School Scholar

University of Edinburgh, UK

Biological Sciences

Anja is completing her masters in Biochemistry at Uppsala University, having graduated with first-class honours from the University of Edinburgh. She is enjoying both her studies in enzymology and the opportunity to experience a new culture, language and snowy winters in Sweden. Anja developed an early interest in science working summers in the Water Authority’s water quality testing lab. She balances days spent in the research lab with horse riding and artwork to relax.

I hope one day to complete a PhD in biochemistry or related field. I really enjoy academic life and feeling like my work is contributing towards a small part of scientific understanding.

Anja's highlights

  • BSc Hons in Biological Sciences (Biochemistry) at University of Edinburgh
  • A*AAB at A-level at Cayman Prep & High School
  • Operation Wallacea biology fieldwork research trip to Transylvania, Romania
  • Model United Nations delegate 2014-2016

Summer enrichment trips with Dart Scholar to CERN and Oxford Scholastica helped Anja decide on a path in the sciences. The visit to CERN in particular gave her an appreciation for experimental physics and chemistry. Her love for chemistry and biology developed during summers at the Water Authority where she learned about specific aspects of water quality, including microbiology and chemical content. And she credits her work experience at Dart learning about architecture and engineering with making her a well-rounded scientist.

“It is an honour and privilege to be a Dart Scholar. The amazing support from Mrs. Glenda McTaggart, the financial support, the amazing opportunities to travel and to meet inspirational, world-renowned achievers such as Richard Branson and Mark and Scot Kelly is invaluable.”

After finishing her masters, Anja plans to complete a PhD in biochemistry and hopes one day to make her own contribution to humanity in the life sciences. She’d also like to be in a position where she can pass on what she’s learned to others.
