Today marks a milestone in reaching the goal of a four lane highway from West Bay to George Town and “sea to sound” connectivity at Camana Bay as Dart Real Estate submits plans for the next phase of infrastructure development.
Earlier this month upon the advice of the National Roads Authority, Cabinet gazetted the expanded and realigned Esterley Tibbetts Highway through the Camana Bay Town Centre and south to the Butterfield roundabout. The plans being submitted today to the Central Planning Authority incorporate a pedestrian path overpass and construction of a second vehicular underpass on West Bay Road. The current proposal is designed to accommodate future pedestrian connectivity from Seven Mile Beach to the North Sound.
Not only does this new road infrastructure complete the National Road Authority’s plans for a four lane highway from West Bay to George Town but it also represents an important phase in the master planning at Camana Bay to facilitate expansion towards Seven Mile Beach. The application includes ramps which will facilitate safe access from the Camana Bay Town Centre on a pedestrian overpass, allowing vehicular traffic to flow unimpeded. This elevated section will commence immediately to the west of Books & Books and the Cayman MAC Store. Traffic along the current Esterley Tibbetts Highway will not be impacted during the construction. Once the new four-lane Esterley Tibbetts Highway bypass is complete, the existing road will transition to a low-speed internal road through Camana Bay.
Construction of the four lane Esterley Tibbetts Highway is proceeding on schedule for an early 2017 opening. This next phase will increase Dart’s investment in much needed infrastructure to approximately US $100 million.
